I've read about Alice being used for college, high-school, and middle school kids but not for kids who are much younger. I've started teaching Storytelling Alice to 2nd and 3rd graders and they seem to take to it like ducks to water. One girl got through all the tutorials and really understood what she was doing in under an hour and most of the kids were able to get through the first tutorial and start the second.
I think that Alice appeals to their social senses and well as their artistic senses. The classroom dynamics were interesting - there was a lot of kids getting together to go through the tutorials.
I'll try to keep a running commentary on how this goes.
A couple of major points:
These are gifted kids.
I've taught Alice to middle school kids for years and years.
I'm very hands-off. Mostly I answer questions with "What do you think you need to do?" or "What have you tried so far?"
